How to create a Shopify Store
Shopify is one of the most popular shop systems for dropshipping. I created a Shopify demo shop to see what Shopify has to offer in terms of themes and features.
How Shopify works
With Shopify (affiliate link) you can sell your articles not only in your own online shop, but also on social media and in the stationary shop. If you go to the start page of Shopify Germany, you will see the picture on the right first. Here you can register and then create your online shop. Just enter your e-mail address and you will be forwarded.
What is Shopify ?
Shopify is a cloud-based online shop system from Canada. It is used by 600,000 companies worldwide to sell online. A total turnover of 55 billion dollars is achieved via the connected shops. This means an average of 92,000 dollars per shop.
Creating a store without HTML knowledge
Shopify is popular not least because you can easily create a professional looking shop with the SaaS creator and numerous templates. HTML or other programming skills are not necessary.
If you have entered your e-mail address on the start page, you will land on this screen. Here you have to enter a password and a name for your shop. One step further you have to enter your name and address for the 14-day test, but payment details are not required.
The Shopify Backend
The backend used to be in English, now it is finally adapted for the German market. The backend is the heart of your online shop. Here the design is changed, articles are placed, orders are processed and the performance is controlled via dashboards.
To define the shop design, click on Customize Theme. Now you can choose between free themes and premium templates in the Shopify Theme Store.
Here you can find 10 free design templates. So not exactly a huge selection. But the design also looks professional with the free themes. To make the result look good, you need high quality photos.
Shopify Theme Store
Here you find 64 Design Themes. You can not only select by price, but also by the number of products in the shop, slideshow or video option. The cost for premium themes is between $140 and $180. Alternatively, you can buy themes for your online shop on various platforms and then upload them. If you want a completely custom theme, you can hire a Shopify expert to do it for you.
There are two ways to add items to Shopify. Here you can see the mask where you can add products individually by hand. Alternatively you can upload product lists as CSV files.
Via transfers you can accept and track incoming goods. Here you can track whether your ordered goods were delivered completely or only partially by the supplier or also when your goods are available.
You can manage the inventory of your goods via Inventory. Here you can easily import and export product lists. Other menu items include customer management, analytics, a discount code generator and the Shopify App Store.
Basic, Shopify and Advanced are available. Basic costs $29, Shopify $79 and Advanced $299 per month. The price differences are explained by features such as gift certificates, professional reports, tracking and tracing, and number of employee accounts. More critical to your revenue is the difference in commission, which varies between 0.5% and 2% of revenue depending on the package. In addition to these 3 standard packages, there is Lite for $9 a month and Plus for large projects. Here the costs for the Ecommerce Store are negotiated individually.
To make the decision Pro or Contra Shopify Test as easy as possible for you, I have put together the most important questions and answers here.
What size of company is Shopify suitable for?
Unlike building kits like Jimdo, Shopify is not just for small online stores. The cloud shop system also meets the requirements of medium-sized e-commerce companies. This means that you can create your online shop as a lone warrior and if you grow over time, you can do this without changing the shop system.
Is Shopify free?
No, but you get a 14 day free trial

Recently backend is automatically set to German when you log in under shopify.de. However, this is only a beta version, which means, for example, that most of the Help Center is still in English.
